Mindfulness based Stress Reduction Programme

Living a Fully Human Life
in this Crazy & Beautiful World!

How Does Mindfulness Reduce Stress?

If we want to reduce the stress in our life, we need to be aware of how much we tend to take things personally. Often these things are not personal. We make them personal by turning them into our own narrative. We end up creating a big story that makes us a victim and we end up believing that this story is true. This truth can be one aspect, but it isn’t a ‘big enough‘ story or the whole dimension. So, we can use mindfulness to extend our awareness and therefore the narrative of our story, to help us reduce stress.

When we undertake mindfulness training, we discover that there is a lot of activity in the brain called the ‘Default Network’. This network is our story and can be particularly painful. The training that we do helps us to alter our perspective and utilises different parts of our brain that enables us to adapt our relationship with our stories; our stories are still there, but they no longer have the power that we keep focusing on this single – painful – narrative.

There is nothing wrong with thinking, but when the thinking takes over and dominates our life, we then become lost in thoughts or oppressed by them and we are not free.

The Mindfulness based Stress Reduction Training gives us a wider dimension to be in a wiser relationship with our thoughts and emotions, which is liberating and therefore freeing.

What is MBSR?

Developed by Jon Kabat-Zinn at the University of Massachusetts Medical Centre, MBSR is based on a form of meditation known as mindfulness.

Mindfulness is a basic human quality, a way of learning to pay wise attention to whatever is happening in your life. Allowing you a greater sense of connection to your life inwardly and outwardly.

Mindfulness is a practice, a systematic method aimed at cultivating clarity, insight and understanding. In the context of your health, mindfulness is a way for you to experientially learn to take better care of yourself, by exploring and understanding the interplay of mind and body and mobilizing your own inner resources for coping and growing.

Nearly four decades of scientific research suggest that training in mindfulness and MBSR can positively and often profoundly affect participants’ ability to reduce medical symptoms and psychological distress while learning to live life more fully.
